Does all alcohol taste like sparkling water? Am I doomed?

I’ve always strongly hated the taste of sparkling water, and most carbonated drinks. Even sweet sodas are just okay to me, and only because the sugar masks the taste. It simply tastes bitter and unpleasant.

And so my family goes to Germany (where it’s practically a water minefield), and I had my first alcohol, a sip of light beer… and it tasted like sparkling water. A brownish-reddish variant of beer I tried, was a bit more unique, but it still tasted very fizzy.

I assume beer is that ‘standard’ of alcohol, so is it all like this? Or are there some drinks that aren’t like sparkling water?
