Review: Wines of Borealis, 2024 Releases

Borealis Vintners draws its grapes from both Oregon and Washington, and with summer approaching, they sent us two whites and a rosé to review. They also make a Pinot Noir, not reviewed here. Let’s give them a try.

2022 Borealis Pinot Gris – 100% Pinot Gris from Oregon. This wine is sweeter than most Oregon Pinot Gris. The nose and palate present lemon, pear, grapefruit, and a touch of minerality, with sweet pear showing more prominently on the palate. Tasting the wine blind, I probably would have guessed it was a medium-sweet Riesling, and like that wine it will pair well with spicy food. Those who like a slightly sweeter wine will want to give this a try during the summer months. B / $16

2022 Borealis White Blend – 55% Riesling, 20% Pinot Gris, 15% Müller-Thurgau, 10% Gewürztraminer. Pear appears foremost on the nose and palate of this gentle white blend, followed by light lemon and a touch of grass. The flavors are pleasant enough, but they don’t come together particularly well and, as a result, the wine falls flat. The wine shows medium acidity, but it doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the wine, making for a bit of midpalate burn. C- / $15

2023 Borealis Rosé – 100% Pinot Noir from Oregon. This wine pours the color of true pink, bright and inviting, and presents aromas of strawberry and navel orange. On the palate, strawberry is dominant, but it is quite sweet, too much for my palate, and I was reminded of the days when cloying White Zinfandel wines were popular. The wine shows medium acidity, but as with the white blend, it doesn’t fit in well with the wine and comes across as harsh on the wine’s short finish. This might be a good choice for people looking for a sweeter summer offering, but it wasn’t a fit for me. C / $16
