Review: William Hill 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 2022 Estate Chardonnay
Part of the Gallo family of wineries, William Hill’s North Coast series focuses on California’s North Coast which comprises six counties north of San Francisco including parts of Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Marin, and Solano, so your mileage may vary when attempting to dial in for a bit more detail. And unlike some of William Hill’s higher-end offerings, they’re designed with economic sensibility in mind: Both of today’s selections are priced around $15 each.
2021 William Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast – Rich with chocolate on the nose, mellowing out with time to present aromas of black currant and baking spice courtesy of oak aging. The palate makes good on what is promised on the initial passes, with a bold body full of dark plum, spice, and cocoa powder working together with decent tannins and good acidity. A nice one to enjoy during the weeknights with something fresh off the grill, whether it be burgers or Portobello mushrooms. B+
2022 William Hill Estate Chardonnay North Coast – An onslaught of yellow peach and lemon runs throughout, accompanied by buttered toast and red apple towards the finish. It’s well-balanced with soft acidity and a creamy mouthfeel that never overpowers the experience. Not an exemplary Chardonnay of what can be enjoyed from the region, even at this price point, but far from the worst. It’s a bottle one would expect during drinks service in business class or one that could work well as a base for a nice white sangria. C+
Surprisingly, William Hill has announced that they will be closing their tasting room and discontinuing their wine club on June 30, 2024. So if a trip to the vineyard was in your summer plans, you may want to get that reservation in now.
