Review: 2021 Tornatore Pietrarizzo Etna Bianco DOC

A point of clarity. Tornatore’s Pietrarizzo Etna Bianco is not the same thing as this wine, which is bottled only under its DOC identification of Etna Bianco. The main difference (by my reading) is that Pietrarizzo spends two extra months on the lees before bottling — and in oak barrels instead of stainless steel.  Details are a little hard to suss out, this being a Sicilian wine and all — even though the brand is now owned by the American Gallo empire.

As for the 2021, the creamy expression of 100% carricante still has an effusive fruitiness — lemon curd and apple pulp in equal measure, tempered by just a touch of salinity and, curiously, some smokiness that hits the nose like a distant campfire or perhaps a good cigar being lit off in the distance. Toasty notes of wood — greener this time — are sustained, along with a stronger slate-like quality that pumps up the minerals on the finish.

B+ / $35
