Review: 2022 Danaus Red Blend
Although it lacks prominence on its website nor is there any mention on the bottle itself, Danaus is an extension of the ever-expanding portfolio of Argentina’s Domaine Bousquet, a brand with which regular readers of the site are no doubt familiar. Danaus proves to be a curious anomaly in Bousquet’s lineup, as it originates from the Costers del Segre DO in the Lleida province of Catalunya in northeast Spain. It is an all-organic blend consisting of 45% Tempranillo, 45% Garnacha, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged four months in French oak barrels.
Pouring a lighter shade of garnet into the glass, the wine presents aromas of cranberry and red currant at first. However, this eventually shifts in favor of delivering some balance and depth, with oak, tobacco leaf, and balsamic appearing over time and with more than a few swirls in the glass. The medium-bodied palate mirrors the sequence of operation, with vibrant notes of cranberry and raspberry taking the forefront before earthier elements arrive, providing structure and support amidst balanced acidity. A medium-length finish leans towards the savory side, with a faint touch of smoke appearing as it fades. A very intriguing bottle that confidently falls into the low-risk/high-reward category, particularly in terms of pricing.
