Is a few days off drinking weekly enough to keep your liver safe?
Hi! I’m a 24F. Just recently got super concerned about my drinking habits and the possibility of liver damage but I don’t feel like my social life really allows me to cut back significantly or completely. I am a solely social drinker.
I started drinking only on the weekends when I was 18, kept this up to a pretty normal habit until I moved to NYC.
Due to the ease of public transport and how many social things/dates involving alcohol, I now definitely drink four days a week. Somewhere between 5 to 10 standard drinks (the higher amounts would only be on weekend days where I drink at brunch). I’ve probably done this since October 2022.
I got a full blood panel last August and my results were all totally fine.
Anyways, my question is, if I don’t drink for three days straight every week (Monday-Wednesday), does that generally keep your liver safe? Can your liver heal any damage during that time?
I know I drink a lot medically speaking and I am a huge hypochondriac so trying to get a sense of how bad my lifestyle is for me. My latest intense fear is that I will die of liver cirrhosis at a young age despite having good liver function levels on my blood test.
My parents drink daily (probably less at one time than me) and have had no problems.
Any thoughts? I know I’m not addicted to drinking because I have no desire to do it alone but I definitely use it as a social crutch. At this time in my life I’m not interested in giving it up. (I would definitely cut back significantly if I were in a long term relationship and have done that in the past).
