Review: 2021 The Calling Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles

The Calling was founded by Jim Nantz and Peter Deutsch, and the brand’s wines are made by veteran winemaker James MacPhail, who primarily makes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon with grapes sourced from Sonoma, Monterey, and Paso Robles, California. The wine we are trying today, a Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, is made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that has been aged for 18 months in French oak. Let’s give it a try.

Pouring the wine, bold Paso Robles character jumps out of the glass. On both the nose and palate, deep, juicy notes of ripe plum and blackberry hit first. Next comes black pepper, a touch of green pepper, and a bit of alcohol. There’s also some light milk chocolate that arrives midpalate and lasts through the medium length finish. The tannins are gentle, and the wine has good acidity, lending important structure to the fruity wine. This is a lovely example of classic Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. It will pair beautifully with a steak and maybe even better with a hamburger, but it is also approachable enough to drink by itself.
