Review: Esporao Reserva 2021 Red and 2022 White

Herdade Do Esporao wines bring only positive words to the Portuguese wine conversation: they are sturdy ambassadors staying within the realm of affordability and are consistent in quality. We review the vineyard’s offerings at a near-annual rate, and today we return to enjoy its two flagship red and white offerings.

2021 Herdade Do Esporao Reserva Red – Elegant with notes of blackberry and plum oscillating in and out with a touch of cinnamon peeking through after some rest in the glass. This red is aged 12 months in new and old French oak, and that influence is never more present than during the finish. Thankfully it provides some depth and keeps things from getting too out of balance. It pairs perfectly with a mindfully cooked steak and grilled asparagus. A- / $23

2022 Herdade Do Esporao Reserva White – Sunny and aromatic pouring out of the bottle and into the glass. Notes of white peach, pineapple, and lemon zest on the palate find their way through a palate rich in kiwi fruit and mild minerality. Late winter/early spring may not be an ideal time for a full appreciation of what this has to offer. Give it a few months and it could prove to be a proper crowd-pleaser at your first fling of the spring. B+ / $23
