Taking a shot makes me want to puke?

Every time I take a shot (no matter what alcohol) it makes me want to throw up. Why is that? I can drink anything mixed and be fine but whenever I take a shot it sticks around at the top of my stomach and makes me get the feeling like I’m about to puke. What can I do to avoid this?
