What were some popular brands of brandy in the 1940s in the US or UK?

I’ve been watching a lot of old movies from the 1940s and I can’t even count how many times a casual drink of brandy occurs. It’s always brandy and never any other kind of alcohol for some reason. It got me thinking about what people were drinking and why. Any info would be appreciated.
