Why is there such a strong divide of women drinking wine and men drinking beer?

I always used to think that it was a stereotype that women usually drank wine and men usually drink beer.

However, recently I’ve actually paid attention at restaurants and walking past dining areas I’ve noticed women drinking wine disproportionally more than men, while men seem to always get beer and almost never wine.

As a 19M and a wine drinker (I’m from Australia and hate beer), my female friends almost always buy wine, spirits or cocktails when they go out but never beer. Ive seen one of my female friends buy a beer maybe once.

My favourite drink is actually Prosecco (a lot of people seem surprised when I tell them that) and I drink it multiple times a week and I also like Merlot and Pinot Noir.

But my male friends (and sometimes the bartender) give me funny looks when I order Prosecco or wine at a bar like it’s not normal to do.

It seems I’m the only guy drinking wine at a bar or party.

Can someone explain? Is it more balanced in other places like Europe or South America? Are people seemingly conforming to societal expectations or is there some other reason as to why women are more likely to prefer wine over beer?
