How to stop binging alcohol and enjoying it responsibly (not an alcoholic)

Ok so over the pandemic, I developed an unhealthy drinking behavior. I don’t drink everyday, probably just once a week. But once I have my first drink I can’t stop, after that I end up making stupid decisions (get into a stupid argument, offend someone with my remarks, send random emotional cringey texts to my friends, etc). I hate waking up the next day, not remembering what I did the night before and carrying the guilt and over forbthe next couple days.

My question is, were there any binge drinkers in this sub who were able to get their drinking under control and enjoy drinking responsibly? Does taking a temporary break help? I definitely don’t want to quit alcohol as I don’t believe I’m an alcoholic, I just ended up building a bad pattern over the last couple of years
