Review: 2 Sparkling Vouvray Wines, 2023 Releases

Vouvray is both a region in the Loire Valley and a wine, known for its high acidity drawn from the near-exclusive use of chenin blanc grapes. Sparkling Vouvray however is also a thing, particularly when cooler weather prevails. Here’s a look at a pair of sparkling Vouvrays to help power you through your January festivities.

NV Domaine Nicolas Brunet Sparkling Vouvray – Clean and toasty and very, very dry, with dominant notes of dried flowers and bitter melon. Green apple notes eventually offer a pinch of fruit as they build on the finish, which is otherwise mild with yeast and a spritz of perfume. B+ / $32

2021 Domaine Vincent Careme Sparking Vouvray Plaisir Ancestral – Aromatically reminscent of Champagne, with a dry and yeasty nose. A bready attack kicks things off on the palate, the wine quickly shifting gears to show off some more unusual fruit character — green figs, unripe pear, and some gooseberry notes. Crisp and floral as it develops further, the creamy bubbles help to offset a light, flinty bitterness on the finish. Solid value for what’s in the bottle. A- / $25
