Review: 2022 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay and Fume Blanc

These two whites from Sonoma County’s Ferrari-Carano were late arrivals, but just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy white wine, does it? Let’s dive in.

2022 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay Sonoma County – Unctuous and boldly fruity, with overtones of cooked apples and tinned pears. Vanilla notes are particularly strong here, but they find a candied quality that comes across as slightly artificial. The finish evokes cotton candy with a slight lychee bent. It’s fully drinkable, but something feels off to me here. B- / $27

2022 Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc Sonoma County – Bright and effusive, though sweeter than I expected to find in a California sauvignon blanc. A postmodern composition evokes pineapple and lemon curd, with a creamsicle body that rolls around on the tongue, eschewing the biting acidity of many a sauvignon blanc, replacing it with gentle notes of vanilla and guava. A- / $21
