Review: Fever-Tree Distillers Cola

Crafted from kola nut, pimento berries, key limes, Sicilian lemon, and “vainilla fresca” (not clear how that’s different from vanilla), Fever-Tree’s spin on a classic cola recipe doesn’t really rock the boat of expectations, using cane sugar to gently sweeten its iconic mixer. The flavor here lands somewhere between Pepsi and Coke, with ample vanilla and a stronger peppery quality than Coke has, but less sugar and a muted cinnamon/allspice note.

The “Distillers” in the product name refer not to the production of the product but its intended purpose: mixing with high-end whiskey and rum. That said, the domineering flavor of any cola tends to wash out a spirit, and I found that to be the case here. In fact, the nuance of both the whiskey and the flavors of the cola got a little muddy when mixed — but, you know, that’s kind of the point when you’re mixing anything with cola.

Naturally caffeinated.

A- / $5 per four-pack of 200ml bottles
