My Alcoholic Dad
So my dad has been a heavy drinker for like 20 years, and although he went 6 months sober, recently he’s broken his sobriety and started drinking vodka everyday. He can’t find a job, and he stays in the house all day drinking and watching TV. And during the night, he throws up. He’s CONSTANTLY texting us about how he loves us and how he thinks we’re doing great, and he’s always telling us wholesome things as if he’s going to be gone soon. Because our grandma also died to alcohol, my whole family seems to have already accepted this fate, including himself.
I’m currently in high school right now, and I feel really awful about this. I don’t know what to do because it just seems like we’re all watching him fall down this path as if it was meant to happen. I want to help my dad, but the rest of my family tells me to ‘leave him with his demons’ and avoid him. I try to hang out with him, but it can be hard when he’s drunk all day and prefers to stay in the house.
If you have any advice to give or any insight, I’d really appreciate it.
