Freaking out when drunk

Once i get so drunk where im barely conscious, ill almost snap back into it and realize how gone i am then immediately start regretting it and almost freaking out. I dont know how this is possible because i thought alcohol works almost like xanax on gaba which is meant to reduce anxiety. Anyone else experience this?
