Why do I think most alcohol tastes bad?

Beer tastes bad. Wine tastes bitter. I tried Buffalo Trace bourbon last night and all I could think of was the toothpaste at my last dental cleaning. People describe alcohol flavor with a mix of vanilla, oak, tobacco, etc. etc. I don’t get it. Is there a genetic cause for my aversion?
