FAT Brands Acquires Smokey Bones
Global franchising company FAT Brands announced on Sept. 25 that it has purchased the Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill restaurant chain from an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners. The $30 million transaction marks FAT Brands first foray into barbecue and expands the company’s portfolio of polished dining chains.
FAT (Fresh. Authentic. Tasty.) Brands currently owns 17 restaurant concepts: Round Table Pizza, Fatburger, Marble Slab Creamery, Johnny Rockets, Fazoli’s, Twin Peaks, Great American Cookies, Hot Dog on a Stick, Buffalo’s Cafe & Express, Hurricane Grill & Wings, Pretzelmaker, Elevation Burger, Native Grill & Wings, Yalla Mediterranean and Ponderosa and Bonanza Steakhouses. It franchises and owns about 2,300 units worldwide.
Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill, a full-service restaurant chain specializing in barbecue, ribs, steaks and other slow-smoked, fire-grilled meats, operates 61 locations across 16 states. Darden Restaurants founded the concept in 1999, opening the first location that year in Orlando, FL. An affiliate of Sun Capital Partners bought Smokey Bones in 2008.
