Recently turned 21, looking to try alcohol

I want something me and my friends can enjoy without mixers, and maybe smoke a couple cigarettes with it. I don’t know much about different liquors, but I think that brandy and whiskey are the ones most commonly drank without mixers, so what liquor type should I go for and what brands are the best? Ideally ones that could be easily found in a demi/split size.
