Review: Log Still Distillery Whiskeys – Monk’s Road Small Batch and Rattle & Snap
Log Still Distillery is based in Gethsemane, Kentucky, where it produces a variety of whiskeys and gins. The project was born from the progeny of old-time whiskeymaker JW Dant, whose name is still being used on whiskey today, courtesy of his great-great-grandson Wally Dant, who revived the family’s 1836-established brand just a few years ago.
For now, all the whiskeys being released from Log Still are sourced — there’s no information on where from — but we’ll pass along everything we know about these two spirits in the writeups below.
Log Still Distillery Monk’s Road Small Batch Bourbon – This new Kentucky bourbon is also known as Monk’s Road Wheated Bourbon, though the label doesn’t indicate such, to distinguish it from other Monk’s Road branded releases. There’s no age information or mashbill data other than the fact that it uses wheat in lieu of rye. Youthful on the nose, with highlights of fresh roasted peanuts and caramel corn, it’s a healthy layer of barrel char that lingers longest. Sweet as candy on the palate, the whiskey evokes butterscotch, brown butter, and a healthy sprinkle of gingerbread spice — this mostly emerging after some of the sugar has dissipated. Some red berry fruit is evident late into the finish, but you’ll need to push past those lingering brown sugar notes to get to it. 94 proof. B / $43
Log Still Distillery Rattle & Snap Tennessee Straight Whiskey 4 Years Old – Note there is also an 8 year old expression of this whiskey, which is sourced from Tennessee but otherwise a mystery. Surprisingly corn-heavy, this has some of the brashness of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, with the aromatic focus squarely on grain and wood, in that order. The palate does nothing but up the ante: Corn Nuts all the way, sprinkled with sugar and dusted with oak shavings. Vanilla, then a little milk chocolate on the finish, and you’re out. It’s so straightforward it ultimately evokes corn whiskey more than Tennessee whiskey, which can be a fine thing at times, but perhaps a bit basic at this price point. B- / $37
