Review: 2021 Ottella Lugana and Le Creete

Lugana can be found in the north of Italy, and the focus here is far and away on white wines. We’ve covered the wines of Lugana extensively in the past, but this is our first round with Ottella, which also produces olive oil and grappa. Let’s dive in.

2021 Ottella Lugana DOC – 100% turbiana (trebbiano di Lugana), this is a simple and clean wine, pretty with a mix of florals and fruit that would feel right at home in a typical pinot grigio. Perfumed, white flowers take a spin toward notes of lemon curd and tangerine, gently grassy with a lightly steely quality on the finish. More immersive as it warms up a touch, but never so complex that you couldn’t easily finish a bottle on the porch this summer. B+ / $18

2021 Ottella Le Creete Lugana DOC – The primo bottling of Ottella’s Lugana, this is a richer and more immersive expression of the grape, showcasing a bolder lemon note paired with tangerines and oranges, then a bright, tropical character that gives the late game an even stronger fruitiness. The minerality of the straight Lugana is largely absent here, though there’s a backbone to this wine that really supports the fruit-driven elements. With ample depth and gravity, it lingers on the finish for quite a while, making it considerably harder to put down. A / $27
