Review: Kokomo 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2019 Malbec
Located in Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, Kokomo emerged in 2004 and presents wines from three appellations wholly distinctive in their quality: Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander Valleys. While they offer many different varietals and vintages, Kokomo makes its debut on the site today with a Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. A gratuitous tip of the cap to a friend of the site who gently suggested we give them a try.
2018 Kokomo Wines Cabernet Sauvignon – Grown and harvested in the Alexander Valley on the western banks of the Russian River, this Cabernet is full steam ahead, showcasing a beautiful boysenberry note before diving into an assemblage of pomegranate, violet, and a faint trace of menthol. Some blackberry and cassis notes mingle together with clove and trace of soil, and it oscillates focus between earth and fruit over a lingering finish that is slightly tannic, but immensely enjoyable. After 22 months in 100% French oak this is good to age for a few years, but it is also most certainly drinkable now. Incredibly decadent alone or paired with a quality selection of dark chocolate. 2019 Kokomo Wines Dry Creek Valley Malbec – A curious inversion, this 100% Malbec presents robust notes of leather and garden herbs on the first pass, with a familiar construction of violet and blackberry that expands as it aerates. Big in body and hefty on tannins, it stays balanced throughout as blackberry leads the charge but is supported by mild baking spice and dark chocolate on the finish. This will give any Malbec from Argentina, France, or elsewhere serious competition for your purchasing dollar. A- / $30
