Review: Boondocks Bourbon Signature Selection 18 Years Old

Six years ago we had our first round of Boondocks whiskey, a small project from industry veteran Dave Scheurich. His pair of light whiskeys were fine but not overly remarkable, which is the common state of things with the light whiskey world.

We promised at the time that additional, limited edition expressions would be arriving soon, and I’m happy to report they are finally here. To be sure, this release is something altogether different; not only is it a bourbon — this one distilled in Tennessee — but one that’s 18 years old. This is all but certainly some old Dickel stock, some of which can be delightful. To that end, let’s find out…

I have to say from the start that this is some of the best bourbon I’ve had in a while. The years have been very kind to the whiskey, giving it real depth that’s obvious from the start. The nose has just the right amount of spice — actually dead-on perfect, with fresh notes of cloves, cinnamon, and ginger in the mix. That’s balanced out by notes of crisp apple and plum, pairing the right amount of sweetness with the spice.

On the palate, the song remains the same, and I’m not complaining one bit. Sweet and spicy in equal proportions, notes of caramel and chocolate quickly become evident, the whiskey’s spice component rising in a swell as it develops in the glass. That all fades as the finish arrive, which sees notes of caramel sauce balanced by a slight cereal quality, a bit corny, which is actually helpful in tempering the bourbon’s bolder flavors and bringing you back down to earth. Bottled at just the right time, and at just the right proof (cask strength, in this case), Boondocks 18 has just about everything you could want in a glass of bourbon. I’m actually tempted to go one higher with the grade.

102.7 proof. Reviewed: Batch #1. 1620 bottles produced.
