Review: GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 11

It’s been three years since we saw one of Highlands-based GlenDronach’s Cask Strength bottlings — not to be confused with its Cask Bottlings — with Batch 11 of the lineup now on the market. This release draws on both Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks and is bottled at full proof — though it carries no age statement.

Let’s give it a whirl.

As with Batch 8, this release wears its sherry on its sleeves — both of them. Deep and brooding on the nose, notes of rum raisin ice cream, cloves, and some dark chocolate all make an appearance. The palate is soothing and so so rich, the essence of Pedro Ximenez with all its raisiny, almost pruny glory. Thick notes of burnt caramel, molasses, and well-oiled leather mingle with a rich coating of spices both baking and Asian, give the whisky an exotic character, the finish evoking complex notes of black tea, coriander, and a touch of chimney soot — here quite soothing given all the flavor that assaults the palate up top.

If you’re a fan of (well) sherried Scotch — particularly of the PX variety — this is a must-purchase, especially at this price.
