Review: 2019 San Felice Il Grigio Chianti Classic Riserva and and 2017 Campiogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Six months ago, Christopher reviewed a trio of wines from the venerable San Felice. He deliberated whether a bit more time in the bottle may smooth some of the sharper edges of these otherwise enjoyable bottles. Today we’re putting his theory to the test and uncorking a pair of them for re-discovery.

2019 San Felice Il Grigio Chianti Classic Riserva – The gentle mixture of cherry and strawberry remains at the core of this Chianti, and while the finish puts a strong stamp of chocolate up front, black pepper takes over in very little time and is quite pronounced. Time has done this a favor, and this is finding its fully evolved form. B+ / $26  [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]

2017 San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino DOCG – Blackberry remains the primary note on both the nose and palate, but herbaceous notes take on a slightly larger share of the lifting throughout. It’s still an excellent selection but the song remains the same both in structure and flavor profile. A- / $62
