Does alcohol really make you lose control of your actions

I smoke weed a lot and when im stoned i am sober enough to hold on to my wits but i hear stories about how youre likely to hurt someone when youre drunk and i just dont get how that works. I dont drink and dont know what being drunk feels like but ive been thinking about starting. But Back to the topic of discussion does alcohol really make you do stuff that you dont want or mean to do?
