Ok, actual advice here for drinking habits
So, lets just assume you are trying to be a normal adult. You want to make good decisions, enjoy your free time with a little drinking, and want to save money? As someone who started to get worried about his drinking habits in college, here is my advice on how I fixed it early:
Buy nice bottles
Now, I’m not talking buy a $20 bottle. I’m not talking about buying a $40. Buy that Hibiki. Buy some banging Absinthe. It feels irresponsible, but it’s really not. What this did for me is as follows:
You drink less. You really want to get waisted on that $100 bottle? Hell nah, no one can afford that. Not getting shit-faced and doing stupid shit is a huge bonus, and maaaybe you don’t need to bust it open today. It tastes better. Seriously, does this need to be explained? You will actually enjoy drinking it, and won’t need to chase/mix it. There is just more variety. At a higher price point there are more and more specialty drinks, and you can find something that really clicks with you. You will drink it slower. If you are mixing your $15 vodka 50/50 with orange juice to down it, you are going to be drinking a lot of it fast. However, a good shot of quality whiskey? You take a sip, savor it, sit on it, and take another sip. You can pace yourself better and naturally sit nicely in that buzzed zone for way longer. Shit alcohol tastes like shit alcohol. Big surprise, if you raise your standards, you don’t put up with lower quality things. You are at a restaurant and see some shitty overpriced beer? Why would you want that? It’s easy to moderate yourself on a day to day basis if bad alcohol sounds unappealing. You always have cool things to show people. If a friend comes over, its nice to offer them a beer as you chat. But it’s nicer if you pull out some expensive drink they have never heard of and share with them. Great topic you can default to if the conversation slows down, they feel appreciated, you get to show someone something you like, it’s a win-win-win. You actually end up saving money. You drink less frequently, you don’t drink as much when you do, and you don’t do stupid things on impulse like ordering $50 worth of taco bell just for yourself. Bottles start lasting longer and longer, and after a while you will not only have more money in your pocket, but a full bar of delicious drinks. All these things start becoming habits after a while. If you lower the price point back down, you aren’t magically going to down a bottle. This is training wheels to learn how to drink responsibly, and in the meantime you will be enjoying yourself thoroughly. If times get tough, you can take those training wheels off and keep rolling.
It’s not the best advice if you drink to get drunk. But for people who just enjoy drinking, I highly recommend giving this a shot.
