Review: Wines of San Simeon, 2022 Releases

It’s been a few years since we’ve looked at offerings from this sublabel of San Antonio winery, which makes a wide variety of wines sourced from various regions in California. Let’s have a look at three of their more recent releases.

2021 San Simeon Pinot Noir Monterey – Mildly earthy at first, but after a bit of time, dark cherry, violet, and a touch of nutmeg cut through the oak and forest floor. Light acidity with clove, mulberry, and a reprisal of the dark cherry on the palate all deliver some complexity. Light tannins and more baking spice arrive for a finish that never wears out its welcome. There is plenty here for pinot fans to appreciate. A- / $18

2019 San Simeon Syrah Paso Robles – An attention-grabbing wine with big notes of cocoa powder and graphite that evolve into heavy black currant and cloves on the nose. Ripe black cherry, viole,t and plum deliver a complex finish with some minerality. Pairs well with a wood-fired pizza. B+ / $15

2021 San Simeon Sauvignon Blanc Paso Robles – Bright notes of peach and lemon on the nose and palate mingle together with ease in a very balanced manner. There’s light acidity with mild undertones of green apple and lime showing on the finish. Consistent and approachable, with no real flaws of note. B / $15
