Why are people so weird about mixing alcohol?

I’ve mixed different types of drinks before and the only effect seems to be that I get drunk. Yet when I look online, everyone says that you must never mix them or else you will 100% have the worst hangover ever.

Is there really any truth to this, or is it just superstition?
